Career Trajectory
Bio
Richard F. ff. Weir (M'91) was born in Dublin, Ireland and received a BA in mathematics and a BAI in microelectronics and electrical engineering from Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland in 1983. After working as a control engineer in England, he moved to the USA and obtained his MS and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL.
He is currently employed as a Research Scientist by the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, IL and holds appointments as a Research Assistant Professor in the Departments of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He has research interests in the areas of neural engineering, biomechatronics and rehabilitation, specifically, artificial arm/hand systems, manipulators, robotics and their associated control. The current focus of this work is the development of a multichannel/multifunction prosthetic hand/arm controller based on implanted myoelectric sensors (IMES), the development of an externally-powered partial hand prostheses, and the development of multi function externally-powered prosthetic hand. The work presented here is part of a new initiative to explore the utility of series elastic actuators in non-backdrivable drive systems for prosthetics applications
