Bio
Dr McQualter did an Honours BBiomedical Science at JCU and a PhD in Plant Biotechnology at QUT funded by an SRDC scholarship. In 2002 he worked on an international collaboration between BSES Ltd and DuPont to produce transgenic sugarcane plants overproducing 4-hydroxybenzoic acid as a test case for developing sugarcane as a biofactory for industrially important compounds. In 2004 he accepted a postdoctoral position in Mauritius assisting the sugar industry to develop drought tolerant sugarcane plants using a transgenic approach. In 2007 Dr McQualter returned to Australia and worked for six months at the Comparative Genomics Centre at JCU investigating the genetic basis for autoimmune diseases with Prof Alan Baxter, before taking up his current position at UQ. His current project is aimed at continuing the development of sugarcane as a biofactory, by producing the biodegradable plastic PHB in transgenic sugarcane.
