Bio
Dr. Reyazul Rouf Mir, Associate Professor/Senior Scientist in the Division of Genetics and Plant Breeding at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has more than 10 years of research experience in the area of Plant Breeding, Plant Genomics and Crop Biotechnology. Dr. Mir has worked in several national institutes/universities (Ch. Charan Singh University Meerut; Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi; Delhi University, South Campus, Delhi) and International Institutes/Universities (International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Hyderabad, India and University of California at Davis (UC-Davis), USA) and has a longstanding engagement in research in the area of Applied Genomics of Jute, wheat, and legumes like chickpea, common bean, pigeonpea and groundnut. Dr. Mir has significantly contributed for the development of different types of molecular markers (in jute), bi-parental mapping populations/core collections/mini-core collections for QTL/gene discovery for important targeted traits (in chickpea, jute, wheat, pigeonpea, common bean and groundnut) and their use in marker-assisted selection programs (in wheat). Development of improved genotypes with superior trait performance through marker-assisted selection (MAS)/gene pyramiding programs in wheat. Dr. Mir has contributed significantly in the development of first integrated physical, genetic and sequence map of chickpea. He has also worked for one year at University of California at Davis (UC-Davis), USA on chickpea crop and worked on a project entitled “Molecular genetic analysis for genes underlying domestication-related traits in chickpea” with more emphasis on the study of a major-effect QTLs for nodule number and flowering time. In addition, Dr. Mir was also actively involved in several activities of NSF-PGRP project “Deducing the genomic footprint and functional impact of chickpea domestication on nitrogen fixation” including: (i) Developing genetic resources for fine-mapping of nodule number and flowering time QTLs, (ii) High-density RAD-GBS genotyping, and (iii) Molecular analysis using different approaches for trait-gene discovery. In USAID-funded project “A reverse-introgression and community genomics strategy to enrich and characterize legume germplasm for climate-resilience traits”, Dr. Mir was involved in: (i) Developing introgression population among wild and cultivated chickpea for analysis of climate resilience and (ii) Phenotyping of wild and cultivated chickpea for climate resilience and symbiotic traits including nodule number.
Currently Dr. Mir is involved in identification of genes for cold/freezing tolerance, nutritional traits and yield and related traits in chickpea. In wheat Dr. Mir is involved in germplasm characterization, development of early maturing, disease resistant and high yielding varieties for Western Himalayas and gene discovery for important diseases like stripe rust, leaf blight and nutritional traits. In common bean, Dr. Mir has contributed substantially by collection of >400 landraces and characterized them using different types of markers. The origin and information about common bean gene pools grown in the Western-Himalayas was also discovered. In addition, we have developed a core set of common bean and that core set was used for gene discovery for Anthracnose, Seed Zn, seed Fe, protein content, sugar, starch etc . Efforts have been also made for biochemical characterization of common bean against Anthracnose. The work conducted by Dr. Mir has been published in international Journal of Repute with good impact factors (H-index = 32; i-10 index = 49; Citation = 3880).
