Bio
Rebeca Blanco-Rotea has a degree in Geography and History, specializing in History of Art at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) in 1996, and a PhD in Archaeology from the University of the Basque Country (UPV) in 2015. She did Doctoral Studies in the Program of Archaeology and History of Antiquity of the Department of History I (USC), obtaining the Research Sufficiency in 1999. Her doctoral thesis "Architecture and landscape. Fortifications of Frontier in the south of Galicia and north of Portugal ", directed by Felipe Criado-Boado (Incipit-CSIC), Agustin Azkarate Garai-Olaun (UPV-EHU) and Juan M. Monterroso Montero (USC), received the Extraordinary Award of Doctorate of the University of the Basque Country.
Currently, she is Principal Investigator of Landscape, Heritage and Territory Laboratory (Lab2PT) of the University of Minho (Portugal). Previously she was Postdoctoral Research Fellow (2019-2022) of Government of Galicia of the Support to the post-doctoral training stage of the I+D+i Galician System (Modality B, Call 2019). From 2007 to 2016, she worked in different projects at the University of Santiago de Compostela and the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Previously, she obtained several Fellows (from 1997 to 2007) in the same institutions. She is a collaborating researcher at the Institute of Heritage Sciences (INCIPIT) of the Higher Council of Scientific Research, where she worked until October 15, 2013.
Her research activity focuses on the study of historical constructions from an archaeological perspective, applying and developing methodologies of analysis typical of archaeology to the study of architecture (fortified, ecclesiastical and ethnographic architecture). In addition, she has focused on the investigation of the fortified landscapes, mainly of the modern period, also from an archaeological approximation; And in the research in systems of representation in architecture, in the divulgation of the heritage and the teaching in matter of archaeology, essentially Archaeology of Architecture and Landscape Archaeology.
She has participated in 46 archaeological and/or patrimonial projects, of which she has directed 21 projects focused on the study of historical constructions and cultural landscapes. Her scientific production has 6 books and monographs in which she has participated as author, coordinator or editor, 17 chapters of book or 43 articles, among others. She is member of the Editorial Board of the CSIC Journal “Archaeology of Architecture” and of the Advisory Board of the CSIC Journal “Cadernos de Arqueoloxía e Patrimonio (CAPA)” and of the Nailos Review (APIAA, Association of Independent Professionals of the Archaeology of Asturias). She is a member of the Plenary of the Consello da Cultura Galega and Coordinator of the Heritage Section of this Institution.
