Bio
Dr. Rao M. Uppu is a professor of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry in the College of Agriculture at Southern University-Baton Rouge (SUBR). He is a board-certified environmental scientist (BCES; from the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists), toxicologist (DABT; from the American Board of Toxicology), and environmental health specialist (REHS/RS; premier dual credentials from the National Environmental Health Association) recognized internationally for his work in the areas of environmental chemistry and molecular toxicology. His significant scientific contributions include analytical methods for determining biological reactive intermediates (alloxan, epoxides, and alpha,beta-unsaturated carbonyls) and semi-persistent organic pollutants (bisphenols), apoptotic and/or necrotic cell signaling by ‘ozone-specific’ oxysterols, free radical nitration and nitrosation in nitric oxide-producing biological systems, modeling of oxidative and free radical reactions of ozone at the air-lung interface, molecular docking and dynamic studies of environmental estrogen binding to estrogen receptors, and more recently, bioinformatic approaches to decipher the origins and molecular signatures of SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2. In addition to publishing in peer-reviewed journals and books, Uppu has trained numerous M.S. and Ph.D. students, postdoctoral fellows, and junior faculty and received several accolades including election as Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (section on Chemistry), Fellow of the Academy of Toxicological Sciences (ATS), and membership in the CyHABs Research Consortium (Ames, IA), a multi-university, multicenter organization aimed at promoting research on Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms in surface water and their impact on human and animal health and wellbeing. Uppu was a recipient of honors for student mentoring from both within and outside the Southern University System including the Telugu Association of North America (TANA) Excellence in Science Award, SUBR Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Outstanding Research Professor of the Year (SUBR-wide), and the Becoming Everything You Are (BEYA) Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Innovators Award. Uppu obtained M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biochemistry from Andhra University (Waltair, India) and Osmania University (Hyderabad, India). After obtaining his Ph.D. degree, Uppu undertook postdoctoral assignments at the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer (Omaha, NE) and the Biodynamics Institute at Louisiana State University (Baton Rouge, LA) and worked under the tutelage of Drs. Ercole Cavalieri, Eleanor Rogan, and William Pryor. Uppu’s research for the past five years was supported by the U.S. Department of Education, the National Science Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, and the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture.
