Bio
I am an Associate Professor at IST, Universidade de Lisboa. There, I am the coordinator of the Environment Modelling Group at MARETEC (www.maretec.org). This group initiated its activities on Estuarine modeling and presently is carrying research on estuaries, regional seas and river catchments using the MOHID modeling system (www.mohid.com), which is the main group’s product. Monitoring activities were initiated in the nineties in order to gather field data for modeling validation in the context of applied research funded by water utilities and government environmental departments, which represented about 30% of the present research of the group during the period of implementation of the Waste Water Treatment Directive in Portugal (1993 up 2011). My research is carried mostly under collaborative projects. Presently, about 60% of those projects are funded by EU programs (FP7 and Interreg) 30% are funded by by FCT, the National Research Foundation and 10% are funded end-users.
The research group is composed by 17 Researchers, 15 being financially support by Research projects. Up to now I have supervised 17 Ph.D thesis and about 3 tens of master thesis in the “Pre-Bologna” format. Presently I am supervising 4 Ph.D theses and I supervise typically 1 master “post Bologna” dissertations per year.
The MOHID model (www.mohid.com) has been downloaded by more than 4000 users and is currently used by some hundred users world wide, courses being organised every year. Some case studies using MOHID can be found at (http://mohidmodel.wix.com/oceanmodelling2013).
Two SME’s have been generated in the framework of my research group www.hidromod.com and www.actionmodulers.com (the latter acquired in November 2917 by Bentley Systems, a a world leader of engineering software production). Modelling of the aquatic environment and the development of management software adding value to the scientific development carried out at MARETEC are the core business of these companies. MOHID STUDIO developed by Action Modulers is a development environment for the MOHID model with a public domain and professional versions and Aquasafe http://www.aquasafeonline.net/en/principal.asp developed by Hidromod is a corporative software developed by Hidromod oriented towards automation of data activities inside corporations. These software permits the integration of different types of models (including MOHID) and field data. The collaboration between the university and these two SME’s proved to be very useful for the three teams with common genesis, but different evolving perspectives.
