Career Trajectory
Bio
My (Dr. Raminta Skvorčinskienė) scientific career began after defending doctoral dissertation in Kaunas University of Technology in 2015 on the 4th of December. The theme of dissertation "Analysis of the second level boiling crisis processes on the spherical body" had corresponded to the direction of energy and thermal engineering – 06T. After achieving Doctor Degree, since 2016 I successfully continued scientific activities in Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI), at Combustion Processes Laboratory. In 2016 –2018 at the institute I was responsible for thermal analysis investigations when using different methodologies (TG, FTIR, GC/MS). With a rising researcher’s competence and desire to get more experience I have been assigned and have started to work on research project activities since 2018. Currently, I’m responsible for internationals and nationals projects implementation in combustion fields (combustion, gasification, pyrolysis, methanation, catalytic gas conversion processes, and performing numerous experiments with catalytic coatings in a gaseous environment). In last five years 7 national projects are being implemented (two projects are fully completed).
The greatest experience I gained by participating in the international Horizon 2020 programs and Baltic-Nordic Energy Research Programme in the implementation of 3 international projects (1 is fully completed). I have actively engaged in various project activities: test rigs campaign, training, project progress meetings, and so on. For example, the aim of the project (FLEXCHX, which was implemented) was to develop a flexible and integrated hybrid process combining electrolysis of water with gasification of biomass and catalytic liquefaction. The concept of the project offered to create a flexible combined heat, power, and fuel production concept for managing the seasonal mismatch between solar energy supply and demand for heat and power. My role in first Horizon2020 project was to assess qualitatively the various potential district heating and industrial CHP applications where the by-products may be integrated. I carried out an attractiveness techno-economic analysis by integrating waste streams into the district heating power plants. Knowledge of the science of thermal engineering, basics of economics and interdisciplinary thinking were needed to implement these tasks. In another Horizon2020 project (TWIN-PEAKS), I am responsible for project feasibility and project management (LEI is the coordinating institution). The aim of this project is to gain experience in writing applications and to submit international applications together in collaboration with partners. I am also responsible for organizing three outreaches. In third project (Baltic-Nordic Energy Research Programme), main activities focus on staff exchanges and skills development. The activities are aimed at raising competence and maintaining international relations. My project activities are not always focused on producing scientific publications, but more often focuses on developing technologies, testing processes, validation opportunities.
My leadership is also evident at the institutional level, I lead my own research group with a research focus on gasification/combustion. Moreover, I actively participate in pedagogical activities at KTU, therefore I constantly supervise for students in bachelor and master degrees. Besides, I am also very familiar with the field of thermodynamics and heat generation sources, therefor I teach students on these themes. Since I organize events, workshops, outreach events I often tent to involve students in project activities, for them to gain experience and exposure. I supervised 2 masters and 5 bachelor students, as well as I coordinated Five Internship students. I am active in LEI activities, I have been appointed by the LEI Scientific Council as Chair of the Academic Ethics Commission and I’m responsible for academic ethics at institute.
Moreover, I regularly participate in various competence-building programs offered by the EU. Several years in a row (2017, 2018, 2019) I have won contest from Research Council of Lithuania to raise the competence at international conferences. In 2018 according to international BRISK2 program, I did two weeks internship at ENEA Trisaia research center in (Rotondella MT) Italy. In 2020, during implementation of international project H2020 researcher had an internship in research center of VTT Bioruukki Pilot Center in Finland. Since 2021 I belong to the scientific advisory board on the 17th Conference on Sustainable Development of Energy, Water and Environment Systems (SDEWES). And since 2022 I attend to the network of proposers of the COST action (Proposal OC-2022-1-26101) "TowaRds Ammonia-HydrogeN ScIence and Technology InnovatiONs.
