Dr. Rajeev Kamal Kumar is a faculty member in the Division of Sociology & Social Anthropology at A N Sinha Institute of Social Studies. He has obtained B.Sc. & M.Sc. degree in Anthropology from Hansraj College, University of Delhi and Ph.D. on development issue of a PVTG of Jharkhand from Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi. Dr. Kumar has worked approx 7 years in a leading public health Institute, IIHMR, Jaipur on different positions as Researcher, faculty and State Coordinator.
He has an academic background in Anthropology with a focus on socio-cultural, development and health aspects of tribal and other communities. He has done Masters in Anthropology (specialization in Social Anthropology) and Ph.D. in Anthropology from Department of Anthropology, University of Delhi. He has been awarded Doctoral Fellowship from Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi. He has done his Doctoral work on developmental aspects of Parhaiyas, a PVTG of Jharkhand state. He has participated and presented several papers in National Seminars/Symposiums. He has also authored a book and a monograph, edited a book and authored several research articles and book reviews, reports etc. in leading journals, edited books and seminar proceedings.
Prior to joining ANSISS, Patna he has worked as Asst. Prof at Institute of Health Management Research (IIHMR), Jaipur for more than seven years. He was also Asst. Editor of Journal of Health Management (Sage Publication). He has been involved in several research projects and evaluation studies such as Independent Evaluation of NACP-II in association with IIM, Kolkata & John Hopkins University, USA, mapping of health facilities in MP (GoMP), Health of Urban Poor (USAID), Review of HMIS of Mother Child Tracking System (MCTS) and Women & child development (WCD), in Rajasthan, Odisha& Bihar (Save the Children), Baseline survey of Adolescent Education Project (CEDPA & UNFPA), KAP study for Jeevika (BRLPS), Identifying Influencers for Scaling Family Health Solutions (BMGF) etc. During last 13 years he has worked in different states mainly Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, Delhi and Jharkhand. Other than IIHMR, he has also worked with SCERT, Delhi; Taleem Foundation; CFAR, Delhi; etc. in different projects. He has also worked closely with the State Health Society, Bihar for almost four years as State Coordinator for IIHMR in Bihar. The main role as State Coordinator was to provide over all support to the state team in research and training activities on Health Management Information System. The project was funded by United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).
At present he is involved in teaching, supervising Ph.D. students, research and other academic and corporate activities at the Institute. He is working on ethnographic studies on different communities of Bihar and also engaged in few Social Impact Assessment studies. In addition to this, he is involved in Concurrent Monitoring of National Food Security Act-2013 and Traditional Medicinal Practices of three major tribes of Jharkhand by TRI, Govt. of Jharkhand.
