Bio
Rahul Raj is a research scientist at Pixxel and also works as an affiliate researcher at Monash University, Australia and as a research associate at the CSRE department of IIT Bombay. Rahul is working in the field of remote sensing, where he has gathered in-depth experience in low-altitude drone-based and high-altitude satellite-based earth observation. His master's and PhD thesis are in the area of drone-based vegetation monitoring. After his PhD thesis submission, Rahul started working as a research associate on the DSFS project, where he supervises the project staff and other research activities. Rahul is also working on a hyperspectral satellite mission. This mission is part of Pixxel company for building India's first private hyperspectral satellite constellation of 30 satellites.
Rahul has completed his high school in north India and then joined the University of Pune to become an electronics engineer. He continued his studies and joined IIT Bombay to pursue M.Tech. During his masters, he got exposure to various social issues related to water, healthcare, education, food, etc. He also got a unique opportunity to stay in a remote village of Maharashtra (India) for ten weeks. After completing this enlightening stay, he decided to use his technical skills to empower the rural population, especially farmers. With this motto, he joined IITB-Monash research academy to do a PhD in a topic that can directly enable farmers to scientifically decide how, where, and when to use input resources to get optimal yield from the farm.
Rahul's research vision is to lead socially relevant and environment-friendly research programs to positively impact the current and upcoming generations. He believes that the projects related to the study of agriculture, vegetation, atmosphere, earth surface properties, and their interaction with electromagnetic radiation will ultimately push humanity towards sustainable growth. This can be achieved using a combination of advanced remote sensing techniques, evolving Artificial intelligence methods, and process-based system modelling.
Long term goals: After spending 15-20 years in research, I would like to shift my carrier towards politics, because I think that to become a part of policymakers, I will be able to make a better channel between academia, government, and society, so that
1. academia can focus more on social issues,
2. the government should give proper funds and importance to academia and
3. Whatever academia is creating should finally get delivered to society rather than becoming a stored thesis in the database.
