Rafael Salas, M.Sc. Research
Mr. Rafael Salas is a Phytoplankton taxonomist and marine ecologist with 18 years of
experience. He joined the marine Institute, marine Environment and Food Safety Services
(MEFS) in Galway, Ireland in 2002. Working in the Biotoxins-Chemistry unit and later in the
Phytoplankton unit as Scientific and technical Officer where he currently works. During
this time, Rafael has developed important scientific skills that have helped him promote
and develop the Phytoplankton monitoring programe in Ireland. He has developed an
ecologically important marine Microalgal culture collection in Ireland. He has helped
developed the qPCR unit and molecular tools to confirm the presence of toxic species in
water samples. He manages the internationally recognized proficiency testing scheme
(IPI) in the abundance and composition of marine microalgae. He collaborates regularly
with international partners in a diverse number of projects on taxonomic, oceanographic
and molecular matters. These broad experiences have afforded Mr. Salas a
comprehensive knowledge in the areas of marine phytoplankton taxonomy and
ecology.
