Starting out with an engineering degree in Mechatronics with a focus on Optics and Lasers, I initially worked in nuclear medical physics and then moved on to engineering support in fundamental sciences at the Max-Planck Inst. for Quantum Optics, working in Laser Chemistry and Chemical Physics. At the MPQ is was working in part with future Nobel prize winners in their early careers (W. Ketterle, T. Hänsch). I later moved to industry developing excimer lasers specifically for Ophthalmology and then returned back to academia and research, establishing my own research activities in instrumentation development for fundamental sciences across a broad range of science and engineering subjects.
Over the past 20 years, my research activities were centred on industry focussed applications in manufacturing, metrology and sensing using technologies ranging from photonics, optoelectronics and lasers, to multiple types of spectroscopy (UV/VIS/IR, Raman, MS, photo electron) and chemical analysis.
Most of my research has been in collaboration with industry aiming to develop novel technologies solving application specific problems or to improve processes efficiencies, safety and functionalities.
In retirement, I am still actively supporting the development of research strategies in collaboration with my former colleagues and providing guidance to individual projects in my area of expertise. I am a regular reviewer of large scale research proposals to the EU's Horizon, ERG and EURAMET programes.
I am supporting the establishment of research activities at HWU’s Malaysia and Dubai campuses.
I have been active in teaching and knowledge transfer throughout my career, starting at the MPQ and following appointments in industry and academia. I have been teaching research led subjects in Mechanical Engineering and Physics to students at advanced Undergraduate and Postgrad levels, including the development and delivery of a Master level course on ‘Optoelectronic Instrumentation’ at Munich University of Applied Sciences.
