The ecology and evolution of quorum sensing in biofilms from a variety of natural and engineered environments (marine ecosystems, extreme environments, indigenous bio-agricultural/aquaculture systems, volcanic soils, meteorites, basalts); the role of quorum sensing in early life on Earth and elsewhere and in creating sustainable systems on Earth and elsewhere; using systems-based biology approaches to understand inter-kingdom microbial interactions in natural and man-made systems; discovery of new quorum sensing molecules and genes from complex microbial communities; development and inclusion of indigenous culture-based science in genomic data science, microbial ecology, astrobiology, sustainability science.
