Bio
Richard A. Pethrick graduated from London University with an Honours Degree in Chemistry in 1966 and completed a PhD at SalfordUniversity in 1969. He joined the staff of the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry at the University of Strathclyde in 1969 and was awarded a DSc from SalfordUniversity in 1982. He was appointed to a Chair in Physical Chemistry in 1984 and to the Burmah Chair in 2005. He has twice been Head of Department spanning the period 1989 - 2004. He retired in 2007 and was appointed an Emeritus Professor in 2008.
He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1986. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and Member of the American Chemical Society, Institute of Physics, the Adhesion Society and the Materials Research Society.
He is currently on the Editorial Board of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Journal of Materials: Design and Application and had previously been the Editor for Polymer Physics on Polymer International for twenty years, Adhesion Science and Technology for six years, International Journal for Polymeric Materials fifteen years, British Polymer Journal and Polymer International for eighteen years and Trends in Polymer Science. He has been co-editor of Polymer Year Book for twenty one years.
He has been on the International Review panels for Polymer Science for Denmark and Sweden and was for ten years on the European Science Foundation working group on Polymer Science and was a co-leader of the initiative on Characterization of Polymer Surfaces. He has served on a number of EPSRC Committees, Polymer Science Large Area Displays and deputy chair of Integrated Development Activity for six years and has served on a number of joint committees for the EPSRC and National Science Foundation, Australian Advisory Group on Molecular Electronics, Monitor for DTI/EPSRC Alvey Directorate Programmes on Plasma Etching Department of Trade and Industry, Toshiba Fellowships Selection Committee, SERC OSTEM Visit to Japan, Smart Technology, BP Fellowship Selection Committee of Royal Society of Edinburgh and British Council Associate Advisor.
Chair Person for the Science Board, Scottish Vocational Training Committee. Accreditation Committee of Royal Society of Chemistry. Vice Chairman and Chair, West of Scotland Division of Royal Society of Chemistry.
RAP has published a number of books including: Polymer Structure |Characterization. From Nano to Macro Organization RSC Publications.(2007), Polymer Science and Technology for Engineers and Scientists, Wiley (2010), Introduction to Molecular Motion in Polymers with A.M. North and T. Amornsakchai CRC (2011), and has edited a number of other publications.
Areas of research interests are best described as structure – property correlations in polymeric materials and in particular the consequences of polymer dynamic on physical properties. He has published over 450 papers and produced 12 patents. He has operated sixteen Teaching Company Schemes – Knowledge Transfer Programmes with companies involved in diverse activities such as sink manufacture (Carron Phoenix, Falkirk), bowls ( Taylor Bowls), speciality chemicals for semi conductor manufacture (EKC, East Kilbride), lens manufacture for sun glasses (Stylemark – Polaroid, Dumbarton), anticorrosion coatings (Corrocoat Leeds), wind turbines ( Babcock – Renfrew), adhesive coatings (Smith and McLaurin, Kilbachen), etc. Professor Pethrick has also worked with many major companies including ICI, BASF, Dow, BP Chemicals, Exxon, Shell, etc.
