Bio
Metastases and cancer-associated cachexia are the most common underlying causes of cancer-related mortality. These conditions often occur in patients harbouring treatment-resistant disease. I am interested in understanding, identifying and therapeutically exploiting the critical nodes in the development of treatment-resistant cancer. My current research focuses on designing and testing novel preventive and therapeutic strategies in various pre-clinical models of prostate cancer. Two significant areas of research are aimed at understanding and targeting the (i) metabolic dependencies and (ii) mechanisms of immune evasion by tumours. Targeting host-tumour interactions can decrease treatment resistance and metastatic progression of cancer with minimal detrimental effects, such as cachexia, on the patients. My current work focuses on understanding the impact of sterol transport and metabolism in promoting treatment resistance, metastatic spread and immune evasion by the host. In addition to the identification of therapeutic targets, I am also interested in identifying and characterising reliable circulating biomarkers that can be used to monitor patients undergoing therapies in an economical and non-invasive manner.
My latest interest includes applying Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence to understand the functionalities of biological and artificial systems. My current project is focused on applying biologically inspired algorithms to solve real-world problems.
