Bio
Academic general surgeon with specialist training in hepato-pancreatobiliary surgery, trauma and emergency general surgery alongside significant post-doctoral research experience in molecular cell biology and translational medicine. First class Bachelors degree in Natural Science followed by double distinction in Medicine & Surgery from Trinity College, Cambridge University, UK. Medical training complimented by additional research internships at the World Health Organisation Headquarters, Geneva, and Mayo Clinic, Rochester, USA. Basic surgical training completed at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, followed by a National Institute of Health Research Academic Clinical Fellowship in General Surgery in the Mersey Deanery, UK. Subsequent 3 year fully-funded doctoral fellowship (GUTS UK) during which doctoral research in Acute Pancreatitis completed with the Liverpool Pancreatitis Research Group, learning micro-surgical techniques as a visiting fellow with the Boston Pancreas Group, Tufts medical centre, USA, and twice won the Lord Smith Medal and Prize of the Pancreatic Society of Great Britain & Ireland. Young investigator awards from the European Pancreatic Club, American pancreatic Association and the International Union of Physiological Sciences. Subsequent completion of higher specialist training in hepato-pancreatobiliary surgery in Liverpool alongside an NIHR Academic Clinical Lectureship in Surgery, awarded young investigator award and best plenary paper by the International Association of Pancreatology. Travelling fellowship to West China Hospital, Sichuan University, China, after which appointed Visiting Associate Professor. Completion of surgical specialist training and Fellowship to the Royal College of Surgeons. Senior Clinical Fellowship in Pancreatobiliary surgery and Emergency General Surgery, St. James University Hospital, Leeds. Appointed Consultant Trauma and Emergency General Surgeon with sub-specialist interest in HPB at Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Trust. Main research interests : mechanism evaluation (specifically related to mitochondrial injury) in acute pancreatitis, novel bioassay development and translational drug discovery for acute pancreatitis, biomarker discovery and evaluation for emergency general surgery and trauma research.
