个人简介
I have a strong biochemistry, molecular biology, and genomics background. I studied Biological Sciences at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Brazil, from where I received a bachelor's degree with an emphasis in Marine Biology in 1986. UFRJ is one of the top academic and research Institutions in Brazil and is ranked #413 in the Best Global Universities index, being ranked # 6 in the Best Universities in Latin America (https://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/latin-america).
During my undergraduate studies, I worked as an intern in a research lab in the Biochemistry Department. My research involved the purification and chemical characterization of sulfated polysaccharides from marine invertebrates. These compounds are structurally important for tissue integrity and also have biotechnological applications. I worked with several biochemical and biophysical techniques such as electrophoresis, column chromatography, infrared and NMR spectroscopy, and organic chemical analysis.
I did my Masters's degree in the same lab and research area but enrolled as an out-of-state student at the Federal University of São Paulo. I finished my dissertation on the structural characterization of a complex sulfated polysaccharide purified from the tunic of the Ascidian Styela plicata in 1989. In the same year, I received a CAPES (Brazilian Ministry of Education) fellowship to the National Institute for Medical Research (now part of the Francis Crick Institute) in London to work towards a Ph.D. in the area of Developmental Biology under the supervision of Dr. James Smith.
There, I worked on the mouse as an experimental animal model and studied the expression and activity of growth factors of the TGF beta family in mesoderm formation in the early embryo. As developmental biology is an essentially multidisciplinary field, I had to use several techniques such as cDNA library construction and screening, PCR, DNA sequencing, immunohistochemistry, embryo manipulation, animal husbandry, and in situ hybridization to successfully complete my doctoral work.
I received my Ph.D. in 1993 and joined Dr. Leslie Dale at the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology, University College London as a postdoctoral fellow. I worked on the roles of members of the bone morphogenetic protein family on the frog model species Xenopus laevis.
In 1997, I joined the Biochemistry Department of the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), Brazil, which is ranked #801 in the Best Global Universities index, being ranked # 21 in the Best Universities in Latin America (https://www.usnews.com/education/best-global-universities/latin-america). I am currently an Associate Professor of Biochemistry at UERJ. As my academic and technical background is diverse, I am interested in applying a multidisciplinary approach to scientific research. Through biochemical, genomic, and bioinformatic analysis, I have been able to develop solid collaborations to work on issues that are relevant both to human disease and environmental research. This has allowed me to work on environmental microbiology, microbial symbiosis, the genetic basis for microbial drug resistance, and cancer research. For this, I have been able to develop several collaborations with other experts from my Institution and from other research and academic Institutions in Brazil. I enjoy working in research networks as this format increases our ability to tackle these complex scientific problems and also allows students to be exposed to modern scientific techniques to ensure they have a broad development. I have also been working for several years with DNA sequencing techniques such as Sanger and next-generation sequencing (Illumina).
I also set up and managed a Core DNA Sequencing Lab at the Institute of Biology for 14 years at UERJ and was the Co-Director of the Graduate Program in Biosciences for 8 years.
