Bio
I’m an astrophysicist with a background in theoretical physics, statistics and strong programming skills. I have experience in: directing R&D teams and programs; communicating scientific results; ion-electron optics; magnets; designing electron multipliers; building computer models of physical systems; monte carlo techniques; big data; cosmology; extra-galactic astronomy; digital signal processing; image processing; using statistics to generate meaning from data, and data visualisation.
I'm currently employed as the Chief Technology Officer in IMI Adaptas' Mass Spectrometry Components Division. In this role I set out our R&D programme and direct my team to achieve it. During my tenure I have developed multiple products, improved our simulation pipeline and invented several new technologies. The most notable of these achievements is the invention of our patented eXtion technology with Dr. Kevin Hunter (CSO). This technology allows us to improve the life of electron multipliers by 3-5x typically (50x is the record), without compromising any other aspect of performance. I am also the inventor of our patent-pending Transmission Multiplier Tube (TMT) technology, which is actively being developed.
I was employed as an OCE Post-Doctoral Research Fellow by CSIRO's Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF) prior to my current job. During this time I developed models, software libraries, software tools and signal/image processing methods for the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) telescope. The results of my research are being used today on ASKAP. The most significant research outcomes are: creation of the LVM-J optimisation method; invention of the Busy Function for characterising HI galaxies; invention of the negative detections method to remove false positive detections, and the release of an open-source library the fits the Busy Function using LVM-J. This open-source library has been downloaded thousands of times by many different users. These users range from universities like Oxford to industry names such as Google, Ford and Tesla, as well as national entities such as the United States Army.
While at CSRIO I became a member of the WALLABY survey that is being carried out on the ASKAP telescope. I am still an active member today.
Before working at CSIRO I was a student at the University of Queensland. During my time there I was a founding member of the WiggleZ Dark Energy Survey, which was the first project to definitively prove the existence of dark energy. I was also a member of the team that discovered the existence of Ultra-Compact Dwarf (UCD) galaxies. At the time, this was the first new type of galaxy that had been discovered in almost 50 years.
