Bio
A reproductive endocrinologist with wide-ranging expertise in infertility issues and treatments as well as endocrine abnormalities, Chang has served as president of the American Society of Reproductive Medicine and as chair of the National Institutes of Health Reproductive Biology Study Section. He is an expert on the cause and treatment of polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, a complex hormonal disorder that results when excess insulin and excess testosterone ravage the female body, interfering with ovulation and normal female hormonal balance. He was the first to discover that women with PCOS in the absence of obesity were uniquely insulin-resistant. In collaboration with his colleagues at UCSD, he demonstrated that insulin could affect ovarian function in both normal and PCOS women. His current focus is insulin resistance and the functional abnormalities of PCOS with an aim of developing more effective therapies.
