Garcia applies a combined theoretical and experimental approach to develop multipurpose tools for quantitative analysis and manipulation of molecules, materials and devices in the 1 to 100 nm length scale. A key feature of RG’s approach is that nanoscale control and device performance should be compatible with operation in technological relevant environments (air or liquids). He has contributed to the development, understanding and optimization of amplitude modulation AFM (tapping mode). Currently, he participates in the development of bimodal AFM as a unifying scheme for topography and quantitative mapping of material properties with sub-1 nm resolution. He has also contributed to the emergence and optimization of a versatile nanolithography for the fabrication of nano-scale devices, oxidation SPL.
