个人简介
The Hicks research program encompasses synthetic inorganic and organic chemistry. We are interested in the design, synthesis and study of coordination complexes (transition metal, main group, lanthanide) containing "functional ligands", wherein the ligand is redox-active, spin-containing (i.e. radical-based), intensely coloured, or some combination of these properties. We use many different techniques to explore and understand the unusual and interesting properties of these ligands and their complexes. Our ultimate goals are to develop our molecules for a wide-ranging suite of applications including advanced electronic/optical materials, catalysis, and alternative energy.
Robin received several awards in recognition of his research accomplishments, including the 2003 Canadian Society for Chemistry Award for Pure or Applied Inorganic Chemistry (now the Strem Chemicals Award), the 2003 UVic Craigdarroch Silver Medal for Research Excellence, the 2005, UVic Faculty of Science Award for Research Excellence, a 2007 Vancouver Island Visionary Under 40 Award, and in 2009 he received an NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement. Robin has given over 30 invited conference presentations and over 50 departmental seminars.
Robin has served on many departmental committees (seminar coordinator, awards coordinator, curriculum review…) and is currently the department’s Graduate Advisor. He has also been heavily involved in University governance (Faculty Advisory Committee, Library, Equity, Graduate Studies Executive) and from 2006-2008 served as the Director of UVic’s Centre for Advanced Materials and Related Technology (CAMTEC). Robin has also been an active contributor to the Chemistry community: He has served on the CSC Inorganic Division Executive (Treasurer, 2002-4; Vice Chair, 2014-16 and Chair, 2016-8), on a large number of national award selection committees, and organized many scientific symposia and conferences at the local (BC Inorganic Weekend), national (1st Materials Chemistry in Canada Colloquium) and international (10th International Conference on Molecule-based Magnets) levels.
