Research Interests
In critically ill patients, a rapid response to drug therapy is of particular importance. On the other hand, the risk of undesirable effects on already pre-damaged organs is particularly high. In the case of serious diseases, the intake of medicines, their distribution in the body, their metabolism and their elimination can be altered in a difficult-to-predict manner. Drug interactions and organ replacement procedures can also be complicating. Concentrations of drugs and their path through the body are therefore examined and mathematically described in critically ill patients. These pharmacokinetic data are used to establish dosage guidelines that allow for safer and more efficient use of medicines in the seriously ill.
Concentration at the site of their action is crucial for the effectiveness of administered drugs. However, the tissue penetration of various pharmaceuticals is affected by local and systemic inflammatory processes. This is particularly true for anti-infectives. Therefore, in addition to the plasma pharmacokinetics of pharmacokinetics at the site (target site pharmacokinetics), particular interest is of particular interest. Studies on punctures, bodily fluids, autopsy samples and bronchial avagen ("Epithelial Lining Fluid") are used to investigate these questions.
