Bio
By July 2021, Dr. Apak has been the author of 276 peer-reviewed research articles and reviews, one US-patent, three textbooks (in Turkish),one book on Antioxidants Analysis (Wiley, 2018), receiving approx. 10300 citations (16 000 wrt. Google Academic) in journals covered by SCI (Science Citation Index), with Hirsch Index h=48 (57 wrt. Google Academic). His work is focused on analytical method development for antioxidants and other food constituents (mainly antioxidant capacity and radical scavenging activity assays), energetic materials, biologically and environmentally important compounds. Recently, he got engaged in the design of colorimetric/electrochemical sensors and nanosensors for oxidants, antioxidants, and energetic compounds. He has seven research articles published in the ACS journal “Analytical Chemistry” having the highest impact factor in analytical sciences. He is the inventor (with his research team) of the CUPRAC (Cupric Ion Reducing Antioxidant Capacity) method of antioxidant capacity assay, which has received ca. 5000 citations for the main assay and modifications since 2004, and is being applied in the leading world research centres for food and biochemical antioxidants. The CUPRAC assay of antioxidant activity/capacity measurement has a number of superiorities over other similar assays, such as high precision, wide linear concentration range, relative solvent independence, capability to measure both hydrophilic and lipophilic antioxidants at physiological pH, integration with HPLC and membrane-sensor compatibility, and high affinity toward thiol-type antioxidants and proteins. Dr. Apak received the highest science award given by Istanbul University (unique among 12,000 academic staff covering all major disciplines) in 2016, and is a full member (2012- ) and Academy Council member (2014- ) of Turkish Academy of Sciences (TUBA). In 2017, Dr. Apak received the highest science award given in Turkey, the TUBITAK (Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council) award of science. In 2018, Dr. Apak was elected as a fellow member by the Royal Chemical Society (FRSC).
