个人简介
Raquel Oliveira heads the Chromosome Dynamics lab at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC)/ Católica Biomedical Research Centre (CBR), in Portugal. She felt a “love at first sight” with chromosomes and chromosome segregation when she first saw the early nuclear divisions of fruit fly embryos under the microscope, and has been studying this process ever since. She did her PhD studies on mitotic chromosome condensation, under the supervision of Professor Claudio Sunkel, at the Institute for Molecular and Cellular Biology (IBMC), University of Porto (awarded in 2007, Univ. Coimbra, BEB PhD programme). She then started a post-doctoral position in the area of chromosome segregation at Professor Kim Nasmyth lab in the Department of Biochemistry, University of Oxford. In 2012 she moved back to Portugal to establish her own research group at Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência. Since September 2022, she is an Associate Professor at Católica Medical School, Universidade Católica Portuguesa and vice-director of the Católica Biomedical Research Centre (CBR).
The Oliveira lab studies how chromosome architecture contributes to faithful chromosome segregation to ensure proper distribution of the genetic information and genome stability, at every cell division. The lab aims at understating of how mitotic chromosomes are assembled, how their structure impacts on several processes involving the DNA molecule (e.g. transcription), and, ultimately, on how failures in these processes impact on mitotic fidelity, cell physiology and organism development. Throughout her career, Raquel Oliveira made important discoveries on the basic principles that mediate mitotic chromosome architecture. In parallel, Raquel’s work identified novel routes to aneuploidy and genome instability that underlie several human conditions, including developmental diseases, cancer and infertility. Raquel has also been awarded several prestigious grants/prizes, including two European Research Council (ERC) Grants (2014 and 2021), and EMBO Installation grant (2013) and the “Prémio Dona Antónia Adelaide Ferreira” (“Revelation Award”) in 2016. She was elected an EMBO member in 2022.
