Bio
Dr. Prabhakar Singh holds the United Technologies Corporation (UTC) Endowed Chair Professor position in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and also serves as the Director of the Center for Clean Energy Engineering (C2E2) and Fraunhofer Center for Energy Innovation (CEI) at the University of Connecticut. In this capacity, Professor Singh is responsible for developing strategies at state, federal and global level for the integration of “Sustainable Energy” portfolios. Professor Singh works with national and international agencies and industries in validating and implementing both near and long term solutions that establishes “sustainable living”. Professor Singh conducts research in high temperature energy systems with focus on systems efficiency, long term operation, and functional and structural materials for aggressive environments. His research interests also include solid- liquid- gas interactions, clean and efficient electrochemical energy conversion and storage systems including advanced fuel cells and other energy conversion systems, fuels and fuel processing, high temperature coatings, and novel synthesis techniques.
Professor Singh obtained a PhD and MS (Distinction) degree in metallurgy from the University of Sheffield, England and Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore India respectively. Dr. Singh also holds an MBA degree from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Singh has authored and coauthored more than 100 technical reports and papers along with 7 book chapters. Dr. Singh holds more than 50 US patents and trade secrets in fuel cell systems and their operation; advanced metallic and ceramic functional materials; manufacturing process optimization; catalysis and hydrocarbon fuel processing, hydrogen separation and electrical management of fuel cell systems. He has also written more than 100 patent disclosures related to areas of advanced metallic and ceramic thin films, device design, low cost fabrication techniques and reliability enhancement. Dr. Singh brings more than 25 years of hands on research and development experience in advanced metallic and ceramic functional materials systems, electrochemical energy conversion and SOFC research, efficient fuel utilization, electro-catalysis and electrode processes and high temperature materials corrosion in complex molten salt and bi-polar environments. Dr. Singh held several key technical and management positions at Ford Motor Company, Westinghouse Electric Corporation and Fuel cell Energy where he was responsible for the technology development, systems integration and product testing. While at Ford Motor Company and Visteon Corporation (an enterprise of Ford Motor Company), he managed the PEM fuel cell R&D including fuel cell system and advanced “on board” fuel processing technologies development for land based and automotive prime propulsion applications, his technical activities were focused on solid oxide fuel cell development at Westinghouse electric corporation. As technical group leader and lead, fellow scientist and member of technical staff, Dr. Singh worked on various aspects of SOFC power generation system development including advanced materials development for cells and stacks, cell fabrication and testing, stack fabrication and large scale manufacturing process development, fuel processing and failure analysis. His contributions in the area of 100kWe SOFC generator development, utilization of pipe line natural gas, electrical performance enhancement, fabrication process scale up and cost reduction have been considered unique and innovative by his peers. At Fuel Cell Energy, Dr. Singh led the development work on corrosion tolerant materials, creep tolerant electrodes and scale up. His contributions have led to the development of advanced bi-polar materials and ODS anode - currently being used in the commercial stack. Dr. Singh’s efforts have been identified as critical in understanding and mitigating the “Dual atmosphere” corrosion.
