个人简介
Associate Professor Peter Zilm spent 12 years employed as a Senior Research Officer in the School of Dentistry at the University of Adelaide investigating the physiology of many oral Gram negative anaerobes including Fusobacterium nucleatum. During this time, he also developed protocols for the growth of oral bacteria by continuous culture which led to him receiving a travel award to study continuous culture at The Microbiological Research Establishment, Porton Down, United Kingdom and the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands.
Dr Zilm’s interest in the molecular mechanisms which induced physiological changes in bacteria also led to him completing a course on proteomics at the Gavan Institute in Sydney in 2002. Upon returning to Adelaide, was invited as guest speaker to introduce researchers to proteomics and successfully ran courses on proteomics at Adelaide University over 2 years from 2004. Dr. Zilm proteomic expertise has led to a successful collaboration with Prof Mark Bartold that has produced two successful NH&MRC project grants.
A/Prof. Zilm also served as an elected member of the Academic Board of the University of Adelaide between 2002-2004.
A/Prof Zilm has successfully established his own research group in oral microbiology and proteomics. His core study area looks at understanding the stress response of the oral bacterium, F. nucleatum during the transition from health to disease in the host. His research interests have led to the utilisation of both continuous culture and biofilm models to study bacterial responses to allogenic and autogenic changes. A/Prof Zilm is the author of 78 peer-reviewed journal articles, with an average citation per item of 8.30, 2 book chapters and is the named inventor of one patent.
Dr Zilm has demonstrated a strong record in higher degree completions having supervised 8 PhD and 10 Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (D Clin D) students to completion. He is currently supervising 3 PhD students and 2 D Clin D students. Dr. Zilm has also supervised 8 Honours students with five receiving Scholarships from The Australian Dental Research Foundation (including two prestigious Trebitsch Scholarships). Other student awards include selection as a finalist in the Australian Society of Microbiology Students awards night and another student’s research poster was judged best AMSR poster at the Australian Health and Medical Research Congress 2012. Adelaide. 26-28th November 2012.
