Career Trajectory
Bio
My undergraduate degree was in History at University College London; I wrote a DPhil entitled 'Civic Obligation and Individual Liberty in Ancient Athens' at Wadham College, Oxford. For two years before coming to Manchester I was Walsh Family Lecturer in Ancient History at Trinity College, University of Dublin.
I am a supporter of the teaching of ancient history at all levels and was from 2016 to 2020 Chair of the Classical Association Teaching Board in which capacity I organised regular INSET days for teachers of Ancient History and Classical Civilisation in schools and colleges.
I have published on Athenian politics and political history, Greek epigraphy, Greek historiography (as a co-editor of Brill's New Jacoby), and the reception of ancient Greece in modern historiography. In 2020 I published a two-volume book on fourth-century Athenian decrees. Recently-published articles include a study of George Grote's use of analogy in his History of Greece, a study of the early modern study of Greek epigraphy, an exploration of the reception of the Parian Marble, assessments of the use of inscriptions by Aeneas Tacticus and Diodorus Siculus and a study of the epigraphical culture of Hellenistic Erythrai. I am Co-Editor on an AHRC-sponsored project which publishes ancient Athenian inscriptions in UK collections.
Future work includes further work on Athenian inscriptions in UK collections, editions of newly-discovered Greek inscriptions from Turkey and a study of the way that ancient and modern audiences have understood Greek inscriptions, based on my 2012 Stanford Lectures. With Stephen Lambert (Cardiff) and Polly Low (Durham) I am a member of the Editorial Committee of a project publishing in open access translations and commentaries on the inscriptions of ancient Athens.
I am an associate editor of Polis. The Journal of the Society for Greek Political Thought. With the Director of the British School at Athens, I am Co-Editor of its journal, the Annual of the British School at Athens.
I am happy to supervise doctoral projects in any of my areas of research interest.
