Dr. Peipei Setoh is a developmental psychologist.
Her research goal is to see children thrive and achieve their potential.
To achieve this, her research examines children’s moral development, and their ideas about race and gender.
Her key research model is to conduct experiments with children to understand their social cognitions, explanations and socialization, applying translational elements of equity, inclusion and diversity where relevant.
She currently leads three projects aligned with these research aims. She is the Principal Investigator of: i) Children’s Intelligence Mindsets: Promoting Gender Diversity in STEM, funded by Ministry of Education’s 2019 Social Science Research Humanities Research Fellowship; ii) Fostering Harmonious Intergroup Relations in Early Childhood, funded by Ministry of Education’s 2016 Social Science Research Thematic Grant; iii) The Development of Altruism in Young Children, funded by Ministry of Education’s 2020 Academic Research Fund Tier 1 Grant.
Dr. Setoh’s research has been published in top academic journals such as the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Developmental Psychology, and Child Development. Her research work into parenting by lying has been featured by The BBC and Channel News Asia, and her work on racial harmony and infant cognition has been featured by The Straits Times, Lianhe Zaobao, Singapore Tonight, Today Online, and The Asian Scientist. Dr. Setoh volunteers in the community by serving on the Board of Visitors (Welfare Homes) for Ministry of Social and Family Development.
Awards she has received include the 2019 Social Science and Humanities Research Fellowship, which supports researchers who show strong potential to become a future university leaders. She is the recipient of the 2019 Nanyang Research Award, Young Investigator, which is the highest recognition given to under-40 individuals who have made outstanding research contributions recognized by the global academic community, awarded by Nanyang Technological University.
Dr. Setoh teaches the foundational module Human Development. She also teaches undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars such as Laboratory in Developmental Psychology, Psychological and Sociomoral Reasoning in Infancy, and Social Cognition in Childhood. She has been an advisor to honors, masters, and PhD students. Under her direction, the Early Cognition Lab has trained numerous undergraduate and graduate students in child development research. Under her guidance, her students have won prestigious scholarships and research excellence awards.
Dr. Setoh received her BSocSci degree in Psychology from National University of Singapore, MA from Nanyang Technological University, and a MA and PhD degree from University of Illinois, USA.
