个人简介
My early research has focused on the evolution of the immune system. I have studied the Mhc class I expression and function in lower vertebrates. Later, with the discovery of Hfe gene (a non classical Mhc) and its connections with iron metabolism I became interested in the interactions between iron and the immune system. In that context I have contributed to the understanding of human iron overload, namely Hfe hemochromatosis, through the study of animal models of iron overload, namely Hfe and B2m deficient mice (see published work). In addition, I develop and characterized a model of iron overload fish and investigated the iron as a susceptibility factor in the development of bacterial infection of sea bass. Recently I have characterized the function of hepcidin in fish (see published work).
Interaction between the immune system and iron metabolism has been the focus of my attention in the past years. I have study the mechanisms of spontaneous and induced iron overload and their impact on the immunological system. With the help of the established animal models for iron modulation and bacterial infection, I intend to address the interaction between the two systems. Understanding the function of genes that codify for proteins in the cross-talk between iron and immunity (like, hepcidin, NRAMP1/2, transferrin, ferritin etc) is currently my main scientific interest. The link between iron and immunity and the functions of antimicrobial peptides are my main research topics.
