Career Trajectory
Bio
I am an Associate Professor at the Mineral Exploration Research Centre (MERC) of the Harquail School of Earth Sciences at Laurentian University (Sudbury, Canada).
The main purpose of my research group is to constrain the physico-chemical conditions that control the mobility of base and precious metals (Cu, Ni, Pt, Au, Pd, etc.) and the main ligands for those metals (S, Cl, Te, Bi, As, etc.) in magmatic systems. We combine experimental petrology with detailed geochemical and mineralogical analyses of synthetic and natural samples to test hypotheses regarding the processes involved in the genesis of magmatic-hydrothermal ore deposits (metal partition and mass transfer, sulfide saturation and solubility, phase equilibria, crystal growth, etc.).
Motivation: one of the fundamental pillars of economic growth is the continuous supply of industrial and precious metals. To ensure sustainable growth, new sources of raw materials need to be located and extracted. The practical goal of our research is to help refine the exploration strategies needed to find such resources. Mineral deposits also represent major geochemical anomalies that document uncommon processes at mantle and crust levels. Understating the origin of mineral deposits also provides valuable information to understand planetary evolution.
