I have conducted my PhD in Biomedical Engineering in a program involving the University of Angers and University of Coimbra (UC). My specialization field is in optoelectronics to assess cell kinetics, through speckle pattern analysis. This work has applications in several biomedical areas with special relevance as a perfusion evaluation tool on microcirculatory in-vivo studies. After, I became a post-doctoral researcher in the field of applied biomedical optics in two distinct projects. The first one result as a natural extension of my specialization and the second is related with the development of a tool to quantify Parkinson's disease motor symptoms. The later evolved to a fruitful clinical collaboration with the Coimbra Hospital and University Centre with great improvement over the current diagnostic methods.
Also, since 2017, I lectured as an Invited Professor, at the UC and Coimbra institute of Engineering, 8 different courses including Embedded Systems, Physics II, Optics and Electronics to 8 different degrees. Following the analysis in the scope of my laser speckle imaging PhD project, it became evident that depth assessment limitations were a main constraint. To solve this issue, my attention focused on alternative approaches, able to image through diffuse mediums, and I got interested to Single Pixel Imaging. Since then I am working on the application of this technique for biomedical applications, including phosphorescence lifetime measurements of oxygen sensitive biomarkers. This project was financed with approximately 240k€ by the Portuguese National Funding Agency (FCT) where I am one of the leading researchers.
Recently, I started several new collaborations in order to push my transition into an independent researcher. Among them I can highlight the development of a compressive Raman spectrometer, based on DMD, for melanoma diagnosis in a collaboration between the Physics and Chemistry departments; multiscale entropy measures on biomedical data for diagnosis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and COVID-19; and an international collaboration on glaucoma prediction using OCT data with Erasmus MC (The Netherlands). I am also enrolled on an international collaboration including with 4 European countries for the elaboration of a proposal to be submitted for the HORIZON funding program.
My publishing record counts 18 papers in international journals (11 in journals with IF>3), 11 proceeding papers in indexed international conferences, and a book chapter (\url{https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=-gd9hwsAAAA}). I have participated as speaker in 3 international conferences and as an invited speaker in 2 international conferences. Most of these papers result from international collaborations. Furthermore, I'm a co-author of a national provisional patent submitted in 2012 that was never transferred to definitive. I have participated in an innovation contest ``Hack the Electron'' promoted by Energias de Portugal (EDP) were my team was awarded the first place. Finally, I had supervised 15 MSc and 1 PhD thesis (ongoing), plus four international students from TU Delft, and participated as jury in 6 thesis defenses. As a proof of my scientific recognition and expertise, I'm scientific reviewer for 14 international journals, including IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, PLOS One, Journal of Biomedical Optics, Scientific Reports (Nature), Optics and Lasers in Engineering (ELSEVIER) and Journal of Biomedical and Health Informatics (IEEE), member of the program committee of 5 international conferences and expert reviewer for the Agence National de la Recherche (France) in the panel CE19 - Technologies pour la santé.
