Bio
Paula M Canas graduated from the University of Lisbon in Biochemistry in 2003. She moved in 2002 to Coimbra to Cunha’s lab to pursue neuroscience. Then Paula decided to stay in the lab and perform her PhD thesis in the role of adenosine A2A receptors (A2AR) in aging and neurodegenerative disorders under the supervision of Rodrigo Cunha, a recognized expert in adenosine. Her PhD included a short collaboration in USA under the supervision of Jiang-Fan Chen, also a renowned expert in adenosine. During this period, Paula published 17 papers in peer-review journals. After her PhD, Paula decided to move to USA for a post-doctoral training in behavior analysis focusing on a neuropsychiatric model, under the mentoring of Robert Greene, an expert in circuit dysfunction of psychiatric disorders (USA). Paula then searched for a place to have a first experience as a project leader in a controlled and supportive environment; Cunha’s group provided such conditions, and she began coordinating since 2013 a DARPA project on “the role of adenosine receptors in depression”. In 2017, Paula M Canas became an FCT Assistant Investigator to start studying “the role of ventral hippocampal A2AR in emotional behavior” and secured 50K. Since 2015, she has published 28 articles (1418 citations – Scopus February 2021) in peer review journals where 93% are in Q1 percentile, in 7 publications she was a senior author (1 in top 5 and another in top 10) and corresponding author in 3 of them (1 in top 10) and 2 book chapters. Furthermore, she had two career breaks due to maternity leave, which hindered her progression to an independent career. Paula M Canas so far has mentored 1 undergraduate student, 6 master students and presently is mentoring 1 master student and co-mentoring 2 PhD students and 1 master student.
Until now Paula has published 51 papers with an h-factor of 26 (2211 citations – Scopus July 2021, with a cumulative impact factor of 251), with several manuscripts in the last five years in top journals of Neuroscience, Psychiatry and Pharmacology (PNAS, Molecular Psychiatry, British Journal of Pharmacology and Pharmacological Research). Moreover, she has reviewed scientific manuscripts and projects, belongs to editorial board of Frontiers Neuroscience and has been involved in teaching in undergraduate, postgraduate programs and was the principal examiner of several master thesis. She participated in the organization of symposiums, and currently she is co-organizing the V Portuguese Glia meeting. In addition, she has participated in the Night of the Investigators and Brain Awareness Week to contribute for public awareness. Paula has established several national (Beatriz Silva, Teresa Gonçalves, Frederico Pereira, Luisa Lopes, João Peça, Jorge Oliveira, Simão Rocha, Evguenia Bekman ) and international collaborations (Francisco Ciruela, David Blum, Huibert Mansvelder, Geanne Andrade, Lisiane Porciúncula, Rui Prediger, Aderbal Aguiar and Manuella Kaster, Jiang-Fan Chen and Robert Greene).
