Bio
I am an archaeologist specialised on Middle Pleistocene (MP) technology, mainly on Acheulean handaxes and cleavers and the shaping strategies developed by hominids. I have combined the traditional lithic analysis with the introduction of new techniques (3D models, geometrics morphometrics and modelling), to improve our knowledge of the occupational patterns in the Western side of Europe.
In 2002, Degree in History by the University of Valladolid. In 2003, Master Degree in Archaeology at Rovira i Virgili University, Tarragona. In 2011, PhD at the University of Burgos, entitled "MP Technological Systems in the Western Europe. Operative chains and shaping processes in Galería and Gran Dolina-TD10.1 (Atapuerca, Spain) and Boxgrove (UK)". This was funded by the “Fundación Siglo para las Artes de Castilla y León”, plus two International Mobility Scholarships from the University of Burgos (2006 and 2007), which led me the possibility to study the british lithic collection from Boxgrove, stored at the British Museum of London (7 months).
The Atapuerca sites have been crucial on my career, being an active member of its research team (ART) since 1999: with fieldwork and my participation into different founded projects, National (7) and international (5). Since 2002, I am co-manager of two MP sites in Atapuerca: Covacha de los Zarpazos (2002-2010) and Galería (2010-today).
From the beginning of my career my interest has been focus on the interpretation of the technology from a regional perspective. After a period of maternity leave in 2015, my relation with the British Museum of London linked me to this purpose. Thanks to my previous established international network, in 2017 I got a Marie Curie Fellowship, supervised by Dr. Nick Ashton at the British Museum (UK). This “Western European Acheulean Project” (n. 748316). The main aim was to developed a unified a method to analyse MP industries from a regional/continental point of view, avoiding the particularities of each site, standardising concepts and criteria between the different traditions. Besides, I have combined the technological analysis with the use of 3D models, geometric morphometrics to analyse the tools’ shape, and a deep use of statistics to interpret a big dataset generated with the analysis of several MP European sites from UK, France and Spain. The Marie-Curie experience gave me the possibility to enlarge my scientific network involving other institutions: UCL Archaeology, Bradford University (UK), CNRS–UMR 7194 (MNHN, FR), Senckenberg Institute (GER), CENIEH (ESP).
As result of this period, I got a one-month contract at the University of Rennes (FR) to make an specific study on the Menez Dregan site and after it, a one year postdoctoral contract at the Muséum national d’Histoire naturelle UMR 7194 Paris (France). This contract was framed by the NEANDROOTS project (ANR-19-CE27-0011), leaded by Dr. Marie-Hélène Moncel. Derived from these postdoctoral contracts, I have participated in several publications both as corresponding author and as part of team works. Besides, I am guest Editor of the Journal of Human Evolution. Actually I am involved in the edition of a Virtual Special Issue entitled "Humans in Transition", which main aim is to discuss about the contextual, environmental and technological variability of the Middle Pleistocene in Western Europe.
As a new postdoctoral step, I have got a Beatriu de Pinós – MSCA Fellowship to be developed at IPHES (SP) (2019 BP 00094), supervised by Dr. Andreu Ollé. As the WEAP Method is exportable to other sites and areas, my current project imply 1) to enlarge the archaeological samples from the South of Europe (Iberian Peninsula, Italy) and Nothern Africa (Morocco and Algeria), analysing the Acheulean tools and looking for similarities and differences between them; 2) to create a relational database to 3) apply modelling and reproduce the possible scenario in which the occupations of Western Europe occurred. This international network will help me to plan an ERC-CoG and develop my own bridge role between key related International Institutions.
