Bio
Consultant Radiologist with specialist training in intervention with academic interests. My research interests include focused ultrasound for tumour therapy including targeted drug delivery and thermal ablation (microwave, cryoablation) of cancers.
Completed NIHR-funded DPhil in targeted drug delivery in Surgical Sciences, University of Oxford in 2016. This involved designing and conducting a first-in-man clinical trial demonstrating feasibility of clinical HIFU device in combination with a thermo-sensitive drug delivery system to deliver targeted chemotherapy to cancer patients with liver tumours (TARDOX study, Lancet Oncology 2018). The study is multidisciplinary study involved many aspects including trial design, ethics and trial management, analytical laboratory techniques, use of focused ultrasound for hyperthermia and radiological imaging, with the world-class research facilities and expertise available within the University of Oxford and Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. The success of this early study demonstrates the potential for significant clinical impact as, following further clinical trials, non-invasive targeted therapy using tailored chemotherapeutics for a variety of solid organ cancers could become a reality.
