COL Paul Huddleston works as an Orthopedic Surgeon with fellowship
training in spine surgery at Mayo Clinic. He joined the Army in June of 1996 and
attended Officer Basic Course (OBC) at FT Sam Houston, TX, to be a Medical Officer.
During his Army medical career, COL Huddleston has served as an Orthopedic
Surgeon, Chief of Orthopedics and Physical Medicine, Chief of Professional services,
Chief of Surgery, Deputy Chief of Clinical Services, and Commander. He participated in
Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, Operation New Dawn, and Resolute
Support. His additional deployments include Haiti as a member of the earthquake relief Operation New Horizons and Indonesia supporting Garuda Shield.
COL Huddleston has been assigned and served as an orthopedic surgeon within the
following units: 114th Combat Support Hospital in Minneapolis MN, the 452nd CSH in
Milwaukee WI, the 945th Forward Surgical Team (FST) Minneapolis MN, the 402nd
FST and 399th CSH of Fort Devens MA, the 349th CSH in Bell CA, Special Operations
Task Force-Afghanistan, Commander of the 328th MED BN in Ft. Douglas, UT, has completed two years as Commander of the 380th Hospital Center in Bell, CA. He currently serves as the Commander of the 5th Medical Brigade within the 3rd Medical Command (Deployment Support).
COL Huddleston’s education includes a BA from the University of Mississippi, MD and
MS in Biomedical Sciences from Mayo Clinic. He is an Associate Professor of
Orthopedic Surgery and Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He has completed the Army Medical Corps Officer Basic and Advance Courses, Senior Officer Legal Orientation and currently maintains an “A” skill identifier in Orthopedic Surgery.
COL Huddleston’s awards and decorations include the ARCOM (6 OLC), the MSM (2 OLC), Afghanistan Campaign Medal with 2 Campaign stars, Iraqi Campaign Medal with 3 Campaign stars, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Reserve Forces Overseas Service Ribbon 2, NATO Medal – Afghanistan and the Armed Forces Reserve medal W/ M device (2).
COL Huddleston’s medical contributions to clinical care include being a practicing
orthopedic surgeon for the last 23 years. He is board certified and has completed a
surgical fellowship in spine surgery. He is the immediate past Division Chair of Spine Surgery at Mayo Clinic and has mentored over 20 spine surgery trainees within an ACGME-accredited Fellowship. He has performed extensive research into musculoskeletal infections and trauma and has published over 60 peer-reviewed
articles. He serves in many national societies, including the American Academy of
Orthopedic Surgery, North American Spine Society, Scoliosis Research Society,
Musculoskeletal Infection society, Society of Military Orthopedic Surgeons, has
served as President of the Minnesota Orthopedic Society.
