Bio
Paul Horton received the bachelor's of science degree in
molecular biology from the University of Washington in 1989, the master's of science degree in biophysics from
Kyoto in 1992, and the PhD degree in computer science from UC Berkeley, in 1997. He spent two years as a researcher at
the Real World Computing Project followed by a few years of consulting in Silicon Valley and Taiwan. In 2003, he
joined the Japanese National Institute for Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, where he currently serves as
the director in the Computational Biology Research Center. He has broad research interests centered on computational
methods to analyze DNA and protein sequences. He serves on the board of directors of the International Society for
Computational Biology, the Japanese Society for Bioinformatics, and the Asia Pacific Bioinformatics Network.
