个人简介
After completing his MSc degree (2002) in Biochemistry and Cellular Biology at the University of Abomey–Calavi, Cotonou, Benin, Patrice Avogbe received in 2003 a fellowship from the African network in Biotechnologies (RABIOTCH) to perform his DEA thesis (equivalent to MSc) in biotechnology at the University of Ouagadougou, Burkina–Faso.
In the course of his DEA degree, he received a fellowship from the Danish Embassy in Cotonou, and was trained as an exchange student in the laboratory of Dr Peter Møller at the Institute of Public Health, University of Copenhagen, Denmark, with a subsequent first author publication in Carcinogenesis.
His early publications as predoctoral candidate directly addressed the genotoxic effects of ambient air pollution containing high-level of ultrafine particles and benzene in exposed individuals living and working in Cotonou, Benin.
Dr Patrice Avogbe obtained his PhD in 2012 from the Lorraine University, Nancy, France.
In 2013 Dr Patrice Avogbe joined the Genetic Cancer Susceptibility (GCS) Group at the International Agency for Research on Cancer/ World Health Organization (IARC/WHO), Lyon, France, after being awarded an IARC postdoctoral fellowship following a competitive peer-review process.
His main research interest centers on the identification of biomarkers for early detection of cancer. Within the GCS group at IARC (2013–2017), he evaluated the potential of using circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA, also known as circulating cell-free DNA that comes from cancer cells) as a blood-based genomic biomarker for early detection of cancers, including lung and bladder cancers. He played a major role in establishment of a novel next–generation sequencing method specifically tailored to agnostically detect ctDNA variants at very low allelic fractions ~ 0.01% (1 mutant DNA fragment in 10,000 molecules).
Within Benin, his research work focuses on cervical cancer screening. Currently, he is leading a study which prospectively investigates the concordance rate of high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) between urine and cervical samples. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of using urine hrHPV-DNA test as a substitute of the cervical test ito screen women at high-risk of developing cervical cancer. His research work also centers on identification of biomarkers associated with the risk of non-communicables diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in high-rik populations within Benin (e.g., taxi-motorbibe drivers).
His academic training and research experience to date have provided him with an excellent background in multiple biological disciplines including biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics and genomics.
Currently, Dr Patrice Avogbe serves as Associate Professor at the University of Abomey-Calavi, Cotonou, Benin.
