Bio
I am an Associate Professor at the University of Barcelona (UB). In November 2019 I obtained advanced research accreditation (to apply for full professorships) from the Agency for the Quality of the Catalan University System. I am the current Deputy Director of the Institute of Cosmos Sciences (ICCUB) awarded as Maria de Maeztu center of excellence on two occasions (2015-2019, 2020-2024). I am the president of the Academic Doctorate Comission of the Physics Doctorate Program of the UB. I chair the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Commission of the ICCUB.
I received my PhD in Physics in May 1997, from the UB, under the supervision of Prof. Àngels Ramos (UB) and Prof. Cornelius Bennhold (GWU, USA). The main goal of my thesis was to understand the physics behind the weak decay of hypernuclei, bound systems composed of nucleons and strange baryons. To do so, I built a complete meson exchange model to describe the weak transition responsible for the decay process.
From October 1998 to January 2001 I held a research associate position at the Institute for Nuclear Theory (INT) of the Univ. of Washington (Seattle, USA). During this period I learned the fundamentals of non-perturbative Effective Field Theory (EFT) methods and started to apply them to the strong meson-baryon sector and to the weak baryon-baryon interaction.
From 2001 to 2003 I was a postdoctoral research associate at UB, and in 2003 I obtained a Ramón y Cajal position. While continuing to use the EFT formalism in the description of the baryon-baryon interaction, it became clear that new avenues of research were needed to understand nuclear processes for which there was little or no experimental information. With this motivation in mind, I became involved in large-scale calculations to obtain solutions of the strong interaction theory, Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), in the non-perturbative regime. In 2004 I joined the Nuclear Physics with Lattice QCD collaboration, with the goal of obtaining information on hadronic interactions relevant to nuclear processes using the numerical method of Lattice QCD.
Since 2007, when I obtained a permanent position at the UB, I have participated as Principal Investigator (PI) in a number of national (Spanish Supercomputing Network) and European (PRACE) projects, using supercomputing facilities (such as Mare Nostrum in Spain, Curie in France or Marconi100 in Italy), while I have participated in the research team of computational projects in the USA (NERSC, ALCC).
I have been PI of the national projects PID2020-118758GB-I00 and FIS2008-01661/FIS, guarantor member of the María de Maeztu project MDM-2014-0369, task coordinator of the Joint Research Activity JRA7-HaSP (Strong-2020) under grant agreement 824093, and local coordinator of two national networks of excellence, FIS2014-57026-REDT and RED2018-102504-T.
I am a member of the ICCUB Scientific Committee since 2006, and of the INT National Advisory Committee between 2020 and 2022.
As an external evaluator I have served in the Agency for Quality Assurance in the Galician University System, ACSUG, Spain; in the Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Prospectiva (ANEP) for research proposals to the 'Plan Estatal Proyectos I+D' and for the Ramón y Cajal positions in Spain, and in the evaluation of grant proposals for the Czech Science Foundation.
I am also a regular referee for different international scientific journals (as Phys. Rev. C and D, Phys. Lett. B, Phys. Rev. Lett. or Nucl. Phys. A).
