Career Trajectory
Bio
Dr Parker has degrees in demography and anthropology and did his postdoctoral work on the spatial epidemiology of malaria. From 2014 – 2017 he led geographic reconnaissance efforts in Eastern Myanmar, followed by establishment of a dense system of community-based malaria clinics (over 1,200 clinics) and mass drug administrations. One of the results of the geographic reconnaissance work is a geographic information system, whereby the geographic locations of malaria clinics are known – laying the groundwork for geostatistical work on malaria and other diseases in this setting. Since 2014 he has been involved with community-centered pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical interventions for malaria and other infectious diseases. His work has focused on communities in conflict zones and remote and rural settings; undocumented migrants; refugees and internally displaced people. Dr Parker runs workshops and actively recruits students from these settings, with an overarching goal to build sustainable, culturally appropriate, and evidence-based public health systems. In 2020 he ran a large workshop in Orange County, funded by FEMA and titled ‘Health Equity Contact Tracing’, to train contact tracers for the pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. More recent work has focused on febrile and respiratory illnesses in Lao PDR and Cambodia; SARS-CoV-2 in Orange County, California; and a growing body of research on the ecology of vector-borne diseases in Ethiopia. As a medical geographer and spatial epidemiologist, his largest research interests are in the roles of human movement or travel patterns on infectious diseases, and on the spatial impacts of interventions.
