Paolo De Matthaeis

Paolo de Matthaeis (Senior Member, IEEE) received the Laurea degree (summa cum laude) from the University of Rome “Tor Vergata,” Rome, Italy, and the D.Sc. degree from George Washington University, Washington, DC, USA, in 1991 and 2005, respectively, both in electrical engineering. After graduation, he was with European Space Agency, ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands, under the Young Graduate Trainee Program, and then with Remote Sensing Laboratory, University of Rome “Tor Vergata.” He started working as a Research Associate with the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, MD, USA, where he is currently a Senior Research Engineer. His research interests include active and passive microwave remote sensing, with a focus on electromagnetic modeling of vegetation, land, and sea surface, and detection and mitigation of radio frequency interference. He was a part of the Science Algorithms Calibration/Validation team for the Aquarius instrument and is now a part of the team working on sea surface salinity estimation using SMAP. Dr. de Matthaeis is a member of the U.S. National Committee for International Union of Radio Science (URSI), Gent, Belgium. He is a member of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society and has been active in the Frequency Allocations in Remote Sensing Technical Committee (FARS-TC). He is currently the Chair of the FARS-TC and has been the Chair or co-Chair since 2017.
