Bio
Dr. Pankaj Bhowmik graduated from Bangladesh Agricultural University and joined at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute as a Scientific Officer. He received his Ph.D. in Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology from Kagawa University, Japan. Following JSPS, Killam and NSERC post-doctoral training Dr. Bhowmik joined the National Research Council of Canada in Saskatoon, where he is now a Senior Research Officer and a member of the Cell Technologies team. Since 2009 after joining NRC, he has been working on mesophyll protoplast and microspore culture, microspore transformation and plant regeneration of canola, wheat and pulses combining plant transformation, protoplast culture, doubled haploidy and genetic engineering tools. Dr. Bhowmik is in the process of developing a crop-agnostic CRISPR based gene editing platform that can be deployed for the improvement of different traits in cereals, oilseeds, pulse crops and greenhouse vegetables.
Dr. Pankaj Bhowmik is also the Scientific Support Lead for the Sustainable Protein Production (SPP) Program at the National Research Council (NRC) of Canada. His analytical expertise and current research areas are focused around enhancing pulse protein flavour, quality and functionality through breeding and processing. As a highly-motivated and results orientated Research Officer under NRC’s Aquatic and crop resource development (ACRD) portfolio (https://www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/eng/rd/aquatic/index.html), Pankaj has a proven track record of providing quality client service, effectively liaising with external organizations and representing NRC’s capabilities and objectives. As a part of the Sustainable Protein Production Program (SPP) team, he has established effective relationships with external and internal clients and collaborators while providing them guidance, feedback, and input. He has been engaging in discussions with key industry partners and stakeholders, identifying needs, knowledge gaps and research priorities, building a team of collaborators, and develop project concepts aligning with the Protein Industries Canada (PIC) supercluster to improve the economic viability and environmental sustainability of the protein value chain.
