My field of interest lies with virology and diagnostics, particularly foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). Aspects that interest me include molecular biology such as mutagenesis, cloning and cell biology, virus binding, internalization and neutralization as well as epitope mapping and phage display. I have mapped antigenic regions on a SAT2 FMDV by either panning with a naïve chicken phage-displayed library followed by sequencing of neutralization-resistant virus variants or by generating and characterizing genetically modified viruses in which known and predicted epitopes were altered. I have also constructed an immune phage display buffalo library from which SAT-specific single-chain variable fragments were selected for use of virus specific in diagnostic tests. I have also played a role validating an ELISA used for foot-and mouth disease diagnosis and have a particular interest in the role goats play in FMDV infection.
