Dr. Ostojic has clinical research interests in systemic sclerosis, and published several papers on his research in international journals. Dr. Ostojic has clinical research interests in systemic sclerosis, and published several papers on his research in international journals. Most of his research relates to specific clinical manifestations and unmet needs in systemic sclerosis: vascular manifestations (Clin Hemorheol Microcirc 2004; 31(4): 281-5), differences in clinical features between limited and diffuse form of the disease (Clin Rheumatol 2006; 25: 453-7), erectile dysfunction (Clin Rheumatol 2007; 26: 1671-4), depression and anxiety (Mod Rheumatol 2010; 20(4): 353-7), restless legs syndrome (Z Rheumatol 2013; 72(6): 590-3), renal insufficiency (Rheumatol Int. 2017 Mar;37(3):363-368) and pain (Acta Neurol Belg. 2018, Pain Manag Nurs. 2019 Aug;20(4):331-336). Significant part of his research relates to interstitial lung disease in systemic sclerosis – value of induced sputum, a non-invasive alternative to bronchoalveolar lavage, in the assessment of airway inflammation in systemic sclerosis (Respiration 2009; 78(1): 56-62), small airway disease in systemic sclerosis (Clin Rheumatol 2020; doi: 10.1007/s10067-020-05353-4), efficacy and safety of cyclophosphamide and antioxidants (alpha-tocopherol and ascorbic acid) in the treatment of lung involvement in systemic sclerosis (Clin Rheumatol 2006; 25: 819-21, Rheumatol Int 2011; 31(8): 1051-4, Clin Rheumatol. 2018 Nov;37(11):3043-3050). Furthermore, Dr. Ostojic wrote a review article on interstitial lung disease in systemic sclerosis (Lung 2007; 185: 211-20). He developed and validated the Scleroderma Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ), which is a self-assessment questionnaire, used to assess disease status and functional ability in patients with systemic sclerosis. The SAQ is one of the SSc-specific patient reported outcomes (PROs) that are included in the EULAR Outcome Measures Library.
Dr Ostojic served as general secretary of the Rheumatology Association of Serbia (RAS) from 2011-2017, treasurer from 2017-2019, president elect (2019-2021) and president (2021-current). He coordinated a huge project of the Ministry of Health of Serbia, entitled "Establishing a health network for early detection and treatment of patients with chronic arthritis in Serbia" (2012 - 2014).
Thanks to a scholarship from the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR), he spend three months in 2004 at the Department of Rheumatology, University of Florence, Italy, where he participated as research collaborator in a project, testing the value of induced sputum in detecting alveolitis in patients with systemic sclerosis, under Prof.Marco Matucci Cerinic. As a fellow of the European Respiratory Society (ERS), Dr. Ostojic visited in 2005 the Division of Infection, Inflammation and Immunity at the University in Southampton, UK, where he specialized in the technique of induced sputum, under Prof. Ratko Djukanovic.
