Central nervous system dysfunction often results from aberrant neuronal development processes. For example, chronic pain is associated with excessive neuronal excitation and dendrite growth, whereas autism-associated mutations diminish excitability and dendrite complexity. Central nervous system injuries in adults often fail to repair effectively due to expression of growth inhibitory molecules. In my research career, I have looked to developmental biology for solutions to overcoming neurologic disorders. I directed the in vitro differentiation of neural stem cells, which were subsequently able to combat pain from spinal cord injury. I used a mouse model of a developmental disorder to investigate whether the biochemistry of autism could be used to combat chronic pain. My recent findings suggest that anesthesia impairs hippocampal neuron development and leads to memory deficits during adulthood. I am interested in research positions involving nervous system development and repair which will allow me to gain additional experience in mentorship and teaching of undergraduate and graduate students as well as junior investigators.
