Career Trajectory
Bio
Biomimicry can best be emulated by engineering materials using polymers present in our extracellular matrix (ECM). Our group harnesses ECM-derived polymers to develop 3D scaffolds and nanomaterials for tissue engineering and nanomedicine applications. Using these polymers, the hydrogel scaffolds mimic the microenvironment of the tissue and modulate macrophage polarization for effective tissue regeneration, while the nanomaterials acquire stealth properties for the effective delivery of nucleic acids or cytotoxic drugs.
Prof. Oommen is a biomedical engineer and a pioneer in the field of nanomedicine, cancer-targeting, and tissue engineering. He was awarded his Ph.D. in chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay in 2010. In 2011, he joined as a Post Doc at Uppsala University, Sweden, where he embarked on the new field of biomaterials research and tissue engineering. In Sept. 2016, he joined Tampere University-Finland as an Assistant Professor where he established the Bioengineering and Nanomedicine Lab. Since Aug. 2020, he is working as an Associate Professor and the focus of his research is to use the transformative power of synthetic chemistry to address biomedical challenges. He utilizes the unique properties of glycosaminoglycan a key component of extracellular matrix and synthetic polymers for engineering soft 3D scaffolds for 3D cell culturing, designing bioinks, bone, and cardiac tissue engineering, and designing nanomedicine to deliver small molecule drugs and nucleic acids. One of the key focuses of his research is to deliver drugs to the brain for treating neurological diseases. He has established extensive collaborations with leading scientists in Europe and Japan and participate in several collaborative projects. The Laboratory of Bioengineering and Nanomedicine, at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Technology, is founded upon cutting-edge multi-disciplinary research in the areas of biomaterials, tissue engineering, drug delivery, nanomedicine, cell-based therapy, and immunotherapy.
