个人简介
Dr. OO Azu is an Associate Professor and group leader for the Morphology and Andrology Group (MAG) in the School
of Laboratory Medicine & Medical Sciences, University of KwaZulu Natal and School of Medicine, University of Namibia. Research activities in the MAG inform teaching and impacts on student training in Morphological Sciences while encouraging creativity, engagement with research active staff compliment towards addressing real-world health issues. We aim to provide a stimulating and diverse research and training environment of international standing within which important and exciting areas of structural anatomy and morphometry integrates with modern techniques of medical investigations. The MAG investigates the male reproductive anatomy specifically the effects of toxicants, diseases (like diabetes) and chemicals on testicular cell and morphology and how this impacts on reproductive wellbeing using various experimental models. In unravelling the various effects of chemicals and toxins on spermatozoa/male reproductive anatomy, MAG utilizes latest technology in fluorescence and electron microscopy, PCR and PCR-based analysis as well as adopting high-end stereological analyses. MAG also immerses itself in Medical education with focus on developing alternative teaching and learning adjuncts in the face of dwindling cadaveric material shortage nationally and internationally. Focus is on advocacy for plastination and plastinated materials and building capacity for the technique within the southern African region in collaboration with the International Society for Plastination (ISP) and other experts.
