Bio
Building on an academic interdisciplinary background in Natural Sciences (Chemistry) and Social Sciences (Environmental Decision-Making), I have developed expertise in the translation and application of both fundamental and observational research into policy.
The principal topic of my research is pollution which, after decades of neglect, was recently recognised as the largest cause of environmental disease and death by the Lancet Commission on Pollution. Furthermore, poor chemical management disrupts the natural (e.g. freshwater or nutrients), material or economic cycles (e.g. plastic waste) that need to be closed if humans, or indeed the entire biosphere, is to have a fighting chance at survival, let alone meeting the Sustainable Development Goals.
My interests lie with developing solutions to the practical challenges of translating science into policy. It is focused on 'emerging' issues for the risk assessment of contaminants, such as mixtures and endocrine disrupters, in the context of the suitability of existing legal instruments, more particularly the REACH Directive, Plant Protection Products Regulation, Food Contact Materials legislation and the Water Framework Directive.
As such, I have a continuing interest in methods for evidence integration such as systematic review, meta-analysis, weight-of-evidence as well as economic evaluation.
