I have based my research career and experiences in the field of rural health with research interest on respiratory health outcomes associated rural environment and farming exposures. I have coordinated research works on reducing health disparities in asthma outcomes by ascertaining the prevalence and risk factors that promote severe asthma and poor response to treatment in different geographic populations in Nigeria. I have been actively involved in the conception, development and execution of many research projects investigating the health impacts of exposure to indoor air pollution from biomass fuels used for cooking in rural communities in Nigeria. This is being followed up with a longitudinal cookstove intervention study to determine the effectiveness of low-cost, low-emission cookstoves as alternative to burning biomass. Currently, in Canada, I am conducting a research on agricultural exposure and asthma severity and phenotypes among children in rural and urban areas of Saskatchewan. The prevalence and severity of asthma is increasing. While the reasons are unknown, there are several theories including urban living, lifestyle changes, and higher exposure to environmental agents. According to the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program (NAEPP), asthma is classified into four levels at diagnosis: mild intermittent, mild persistent, moderate persistent and severe persistent based on magnitude of severity. The expressions of these forms of asthma differ between rural and urban children. My research interests are in the areas of: 1) respiratory health, 2) pediatric asthma, 3) rural health, and 4) environmental epidemiology. Specifically, my research interests focus on characterizing asthma severity and phenotypes in relation to agricultural exposures and diagnostic patterns across rural-urban gradient. The results of the study help to identify which groups of children are at increased risk of poor lung health outcomes and will be a helpful tool for planning asthma care in children, particularly those living in rural areas.
