Olcay Kursun received his BS and MS degrees in Computer Engineering from Bogazici University, Istanbul, Turkey, in 1998 and 2000, respectively. He received his PhD degree in 2004 in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida on developing cortex-inspired neural networks. He worked for Istanbul University as an associate professor until 2016. After more than a decade of international collaboration, in 2016, he joined his collaborators' neuroscience lab in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he continued developing machine learning and computational neuroscience algorithms. From 2017 to 2021, he worked as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Central Arkansas. Currently, he has been appointed as a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Auburn University at Montgomery, AL, USA. His research interests are in the field of machine learning and pattern recognition with particular interest in deep learning, multiview machine learning, biological neural models and their applications in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and embedded systems.

Longer version: Olcay Kursun received his BS and MS degrees in Computer Engineering from Bogazici University, in Istanbul, in 1998 and 2000, respectively, where he completed his MS thesis on neural networks under the supervision of Dr. Ethem Alpaydin. He received his PhD degree in 2004 in Computer Science from the University of Central Florida (UCF), where he completed his PhD dissertation and worked on neuroscience research projects under the supervision of (and later in collaboration with) Dr. Oleg V. Favorov from the Biomedical Engineering Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was later appointed at UCF as a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science and also as a postdoc researcher for Dr. K. Michael Reynolds in the Department of Criminal Justice, from 2003 to 2006, where he taught both graduate/undergraduate classes and worked in projects of Florida Orange County Sheriff's Office on developing data mining algorithms. From 2009 to 2016, he worked in the Department of Computer Engineering at Istanbul University. He has obtained the Associate Professor title given by the Turkish Council of Higher Education in 2013. After more than a decade of international collaboration with Drs. Favorov and Tommerdahl from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC), in 2016, he joined their neuroscience lab at UNC, where he continued developing machine learning and computational neuroscience algorithms in collaboration with Cortical Metrics LLC. From 2017 to 2021, he worked as a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Central Arkansas, where he co-founded the Intelligent and Embedded Systems lab with Dr. Ahmad Patooghy. Since Fall 2021, he is a faculty member in the Department of Computer Science at Auburn University at Montgomery, AL, USA and has taught computer architecture, data structures, algorithm analysis, operating systems, and formal languages & automata theory courses. His research interests are in the field of machine learning and pattern recognition with particular interest in deep learning, multiview machine learning, biological neural models and their applications in neuroscience, biomedical engineering, and embedded systems.
