个人简介
Dr. Serge Kubanza is a lecturer of human Geography at the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa and has more than five years of teaching experience at the tertiary level. He has taught in the DRC and in South Africa. He is currently teaching Post-graduate and undergraduate classes at the University of the Witwatersrand and at St. Augustine College of South Africa. For each of these classes, He is able to design all aspects of the course, including assignments, lecture materials, and grading.
Research
A strong research agenda is a critical part of his teaching career. His own research brings new perspectives and new experiences into his teaching, making him a more informed and (it is hoped) more interesting teacher. His academic identity, reflected in his research, has two important dimensions: He is a Political Geographer and he is an African. Both aspects of his work are critical, and he works to maintain both disciplinary connections in Geography (itself a multidisciplinary discipline) and interdisciplinary connections in African Studies. He is closely connected to the Centre of African Studies scholars in Germany.
Ph.D
His pursuit of a PhD was somewhat accidental. Coming from several years as a consultant to civil society organizations and other international development agencies in South Africa, He returned to the university to continue his studies. His frustrations with the development process on the ground led him to pursue research on environmental justice and social justice in the context of waste management. However, exposure to new ways of thinking about development-through Political Geography, Geography of the Environment, Political Economy, Social Organisation Theory, etc.- convinced him that better technical skill would not eliminate his frustrations with development practice. He decided to engage more fundamental questions about development through deeper research in a PhD program. He has never regretted this decision.
Dissertation
His Ph.D dissertation, titled “Urban environmental Problems: Social and Environmental Injustices in Solid Waste Management in Kinshasa, the Democratic Republic of Congo,” asked questions about the injustices in solid waste collection in Congolese cities, particularly their consequences on the poor. His decision to base his dissertation on the concept of justice in the context of solid waste management was born from the argument that “one in every two urban residents is poor” in cities of sub-Saharan Africa. Extensive literatures have been conducted to explore various attributes of solid waste management. Studies, however, relating to social and environmental injustices in the management of solid waste in Congolese cities have not been explored. He decided that he should know more about the political geography of waste management in the country.
