Bio
Nuno Canha (born 1982) holds a MSc in Chemistry at Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) - University of Lisbon (Portugal) and completed a PhD degree in Environmental Sciences in Delft University of Technology (The Netherlands) in 2014. During his PhD, he worked at the researcher center C2TN (Centro de Ciências e Tecnologias Nucleares) of IST and focused his research on indoor air quality (IAQ) of primary schools from different types of environments (urban and rural) with the main aim of understanding which where the particulate matter (PM) sources in classrooms and how the exposure to it could be minimised in these environments. For this, new sampling methods of PM were developed, along with PM chemical characterisation and identification of the contribution of the different pollution sources to PM levels, by source apportionment techniques.
In 2015, N. Canha started his position as a postdoc researcher at C2TN and at CESAM (Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies) of University of Aveiro with the aim, among others, of identifying the toxicity potential of PM (through the mutagenic potential of the organic fraction of PM, assessed by the AMES essay) and of assessing the human exposure to air pollutants in different specific types of micro-environments. In 2018, he started as a junior researcher at C2TN focusing on the human exposure in indoor environments and aiming a general characterisation and definition of particles profiles, their toxicity and sources.
N. Canha has participated in several European projects from different funding programmes/agencies (LIFE Programme, Interreg Sudoe, Interreg MED, COST Actions, IAEA) having different roles, from the participation in the writing of the proposal to the implementation of technical, management and communication tasks. Overall, he has participated in 16 national and international research projects. He integrated the research team of 3 FCT projects, 2 COST Actions, 1 FP7-ENVIRONMENT, 4 IAEA projects, 1 LIFE Programme, 3 INTERREG SUDOE and 1 INTERREG MED.
Today his research focus is on indoor and outdoor air pollution sources of particulate matter, their characterisation and assessment of their contribution for the integrated human exposure to air pollutants, along with the understanding of their health impact (by identifying their toxicity potential).
In order to disseminate his research, N. Canha published 2 books, 4 book chapters and 56 papers (27 papers as first author) in peer review journals (in ISI), with 915 citations and h-index 19. He has contributions in scientific national and international conferences (23 proceedings, 32 orals and 14 posters, as author and presenter). He was guest editor of ISI scientific journal (International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health) and reviewer in several others. He participated in 20 international training courses, 4 scientific and 3 organizing committees of international conferences. He supervised 5 MSc and 11 BSc students and currently supervises 1 MSc. He lectured the Chemistry course at IST in 2019-2020. He was jury in 2 academic examinations.
Regarding management activities, currently he is the Innovation Ambassador of C2TN-IST (promoting dissemination activities of Technology Transfer Unit of IST), Member of Outreach Group (GO) of C2TN-IST since 2018, and Objective manager of sub-area of “Environment and new energy sources - anthropogenic impact, evaluation, treatment and recycling” of thematic strand “Earth systems, radioactivity and cultural heritage” of C2TN-IST, since July 2016. Since the start of his research career, N. Canha has always actively promoted and participated in several science communication activities to different types of public (e.g., children and general public).
